He had never been sick before. A real healthy horse. We found him down in his stall colic;king at 4:30 am. Our vet examined him and did a tubing procedure. His vital signs were not good. She recommended Paco be taken to Michigan State University Large Animal Clinic. They examined thoroughly examined him and did another tubing procedure. His pain level and vital signs did not improve. We decided on surgery. They found a 12 ft. section of his intestine was dead because of this tumor which had wrapped around the intestine and stopped the blood flow. In addition they found that toxic bacteria from the dead intestine was now in his system. The vet said The dead intestine could be removed but Paco would be a very sick horse due to the toxic bacteria now in his system. His chance of survival was 25%. I decide that I didn't want Paco to suffer anymore. He was put down at 2:00 pm. What a shock to me and my family. Within a 10 hour period PACO went from being a healthy horse to no longer being with us. To this day I'm still having trouble accepting the fact that Paco is gone. It happened so fast. Paco will always be in my heart.ccmoxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12926538228489300039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1795154952450880666.post-64390672515741703402012-06-06T13:32:24.549-04:002012-06-06T13:32:24.549-04:00The cause of this abscess could not be determined....The cause of this abscess could not be determined. Most likely it originated as an unidentified puncture wound that had since healed over but allowed an entry point of bacteria. The other causes to consider would be previous surgery in this area (i.e. cryptorchid surgery) but there was no history of that here. Odd case.Deron Nelson DVMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14924244602308086454noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1795154952450880666.post-89600705332172589352012-06-05T20:18:49.147-04:002012-06-05T20:18:49.147-04:00Was there a determined cause for the abcess? Was there a determined cause for the abcess?sulphurfirehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16689823988525807811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1795154952450880666.post-18968405511993619372012-03-02T22:27:23.136-05:002012-03-02T22:27:23.136-05:00Wow so literally you pinch them! With the hand in the rectum, the uterus can be identified. The way I prefer to pinch twins is to manually squeeze one fo the vesicles, which are obviously in the uterus, by squeezing it between my thumb and index finger. You can usually feel them rupture with this technique. Some vets prefer to rupture the vesicle by using the ultrasound probe and sqeezing the uterus (with the vesicle inside of it) between the ultrasound probe and the pelvic bone. The method usually comes down to doctor preference. Generally the the less manipulation of the uterus that is required, the better. The other relavent consideration that I did not mention is that at day 14 post ovulation, the pregnancy is still freely moveable within the uterus. So when you have 2 vesicles that are very close together, as in this ultrasound image, they can be manually seperated. I typically try to get the one that I am going to pinch as far away from the other vesicle as possible before I try to 'pinch' it. If you wait until day 17 or so post ovulation to look for twins, if the vesicles are in close proximity to each other, you can no longer seperate them. Hope that answers your questions about technique.Deron Nelson DVMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14924244602308086454noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1795154952450880666.post-62865366840062843332012-03-01T22:05:09.565-05:002012-03-01T22:05:09.565-05:00What is this process of 'pinching'? Same thing for us as above, but we lived near WSU Vet Hospital so we brought him there, on Xmas eve, and couldn't afford the surgery, so we put him down there. The docs asked if they do an autopsy for teaching, we said yes, and the strangulating lipoma was the cause. They said there wasn't anything we could have done differently, but it's nice to read this for sure.Daniellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01551681741675151752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1795154952450880666.post-26215060294956057042012-02-09T21:43:40.143-05:002012-02-09T21:43:40.143-05:00Really like the new website! It appears more as 'bruising' in the messentery then what you might think of as a frank blood clot.
